The HTW5.0-126 downwind turbine— which features a permanent-magnet generator, medium-speed gearbox and 126-metre-diameter blade span — is mounted on an advanced spar floater designed by consortium member Japan Marine United.
The 5MW machine will be the third floating turbine to be installed at the state-backed consortium’s demonstration site off the coast of Fukushima prefecture, following the installation of a 2MW Hitachi model in late 2013 and the addition of a 7MW variant — built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) — last year.
