The go-ahead for the controversial Franco-Chinese plant following a six-week review of the plan by the new prime minister was finally granted after the UK government imposed what it called "significant new safeguards” in order to protect national security – dashing hopes in some quarters that offshore wind could be asked to fill the gap left by cancellation of the project.
