Scotland’s first utility-scale battery facility has been opened near Edinburgh.

The 20MW Broxburn energy storage facility, built and managed by RES for the Renewables Infrastructure Group (RIG), will help balance the UK electricity network using enhanced frequency response.

The £1.5m facility is expected save the National Grid £200m a year.

Scotland’s Minister for Trade, Investment & Innovation, Ivan McKee, said: “The Broxburn Energy Storage project, which is [the country’s] first sub-second response energy storage project, is a welcome addition to Scotland’s low carbon energy system.
