In a landmark deal for the US power sector, utility Alliant will pay NextEra Energy to slip out of its existing PPA with an Iowa nuclear power plant five years early, and will partially replace the output with four repowered wind farms.

Alliant Energy, owner of one of Iowa’s large regulated utilities, will make a $110m buyout payment to NextEra to end its nuclear PPA with the 615MW Duane Arnold Energy Center in 2020, rather than seeing it through to its contracted end in 2025.
