After less than 100 days in office, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s fourth government could break apart over a continued disagreement between her Christian Democrats (CDU) and its increasingly estranged Bavarian “sister party”, the Christian Social Union (CSU) – which may open the way for an entry to government for the very pro-renewables Greens.

Feeling the heat of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party on his neck only four months before key state elections in Bavaria, interior minister Horst Seehofer from the CSU is blackmailing Merkel by ordering federal police from the end of June onwards to block refugees at Bavaria’s borders who have already been registered with another EU member state.
