Whether the EU compromise on a 2030 renewable energy target is a breakthrough or a dramatic disappointment depends on which commentator you’re listening to.

The more globally-minded the politician or industry group, the greater the welcome for the compromise 32% target agreed upon in the small hours of the night on Thursday seems to become.

Adnan Amin, director general of the Abu Dhabi-based International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) thinks the decision “is a move that consolidates Europe’s position at the forefront of the global energy transformation, and establishes a positive decarbonisation pathway in line with its commitments under the Paris Agreement.”
