The cabinet of Chancellor Angela Merkel has set up a commission to work out a plan by year-end for the phase out of polluting coal and lignite-based generation that could result in an acceleration of the expansion of wind and solar power in Europe’s largest economy.

The commission called “growth, structural change and employment” with four chairpersons and 24 members from government, parliament, unions and green groups should find a way to both reach the country’s climate targets and guarantee growth and jobs in regions now dependent on fossil power.
