Algeria’s state oil company Sonatrach plans to develop solar projects in the North African country in conjunction with foreign partners, the company’s CEO said as it signed a deal with Italian oil player Eni.

Abdelmoumen Ould Kaddour said: “We have invested to get 1.6GW, we definitely need to focus on solar,” in comments reported by the Reuters news agency.

Sonatrach has struggled to attract foreign energy investment, a position that Ould Kaddour, who took over the reins a year ago, is trying to reverse.
