An exit from coal and lignite-fired power generation in Germany will take much longer than two or three years, but by 2030 the country will cut down power production from the fossil sources by half, new economics and energy minister Peter Altmaier said at the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue.

In a coalition contract agreed upon earlier this year, the parties forming Chancellor Angela Merkel’s fourth cabinet had pledged to boost the share of renewable energies in the country’s electricity consumption to 65% by 2030 (from 36% in 2017).
