Portugal’s electricity needs last month were met solely by renewable energy, marking the first time the country produced more clean energy than it consumed.

According to data from Portugal’s transmission system operator REN, the renewable energy produced in March reached 4812GWh, which exceeded the country’s consumption of 4647GWh.

“The renewable electricity production accounted for 103.6 % of the electricity consumption, a value unmatched in the last 40 years,” said Portugal’s renewable energy association APREN.
