Vestas will forge a partnership with Swedish technology start-up Northvolt to develop a lithium-ion battery platform, as the turbine OEM deepens its ties with a battery storage sector it says will play an increasingly significant role in the wind industry’s future.

Vestas will invest an initial €10m ($11.8m) in a joint seven-year R&D push to develop systems that can “integrate battery storage solutions into wind turbines and full power plant system design”, the Danish group said in a statement.
