Chile has approved its first National Emissions Reduction Plan (NERP) with an aim to reduce energy sector greenhouse gas emissions by 30% from current levels.

The plan is based on higher incorporation of renewables – mainly solar and wind – and significant increases in the use of electricity in transport and heating.

With around 17% of the country’s power supply from renewables, but the majority still heavily dependent on fossil fuels, the energy sector is responsible for 77% of Chile’s total emissions.
