A merger of the UK retail energy businesses of SSE and Innogy is set to create a major new British domestic utility – and leave its two former parent groups more closely focused on building low-carbon generation assets such as wind.

The retail arm of UK-based SSE and the German energy group’s Npower domestic business will combine to form a new company that analysts said would be the country’s second-largest supplier to households.
