Brazil has joined the International Energy Agency (IEA) as an ‘Association’ country, opening the way for the South American nation to work with the global body in areas such as renewables and energy efficiency.

The announcement came as Brazilian energy minister Fernando Coelho Filho and IEA director Fatih Birol signed a three-year co-operation deal over key energy issues.

A statement said Brazil’s “experience in managing renewable resources in its energy mix can contribute greatly to IEA discussions on a broadened concept of energy security.
