Hopes are fading that federal elections on Sunday may result in Germany increasing its renewable energy targets or accelerating its energy transition, as all latest opinion polls point to narrowed-down options for Chancellor Angela Merkel in the choice of her future coalition partners.

Pollsters say more than a third of voters are still undecided. They nevertheless agree that a last-minute swing enabling her opponent Martin Schulz from the Social Democrats (SPD) to become Chancellor in a pro-renewables, three way coalition between the SPD, the radical Left Party and the Greens is very unlikely.
