Swiss group ABB has landed a deal to provide a 2MW battery-based energy storage system to support the integration and transmission of power from Dong Energy’s 90MW Burbo Bank wind farm off the northwest coast of the UK.
The contract will be the first time an offshore wind farm is integrated with a battery storage system in order to deliver frequency response to the electricity network, a mechanism used by the UK’s National Grid to help manage grid stability.
