In the middle of the campaign for federal elections, Chancellor Angela Merkel for the first time said a ban for cars powered by diesel or gasoline – as planned in neighbouring countries and demanded by the opposition Green Party – would also be sensible in Germany, but didn’t commit to an actual deadline.

“I can’t tell an exact year [as deadline], but the approach is right,” she told the Super Illu magazine in an interview when asked about a ban for non-electric cars in Europe’s biggest economy.
