The UK could become the first country in the world to allow consumers and businesses to compete in national energy markets — alongside utilities and independent power producers — using their solar and storage equipment, as well as nascent demand-side response solutions.

The Smart Systems and Flexibility Plan, unveiled on Monday by the government and energy regulator Ofgem, vows to “maximise access to the existing range of markets (capacity, wholesale, balancing and ancillary services), alongside new markets or revenue streams”.
