The possible closure of up to 17 nuclear power stations in France by 2025 could give a further boost to the development of renewable energy in the country and help push electricity prices up across Europe – a necessary prerequisite for the construction of zero-subsidy offshore wind.

French ecological transition minister Nicolas Hulot this week told broadcaster RTL that in order to reach a reduction to 50% of nuclear in the country’s electricity mix by 2025 – as envisaged in its recent climate plan – “perhaps up to 17” out of 58 operating nuclear plants would need to be shut.
