Investment in the electricity sector was larger than in the fossil-fuel supply industry for the first time ever last year, according to a report from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

A total of $718bn was invested in the global electricity sector in 2016 — albeit a 1% fall on the previous year, partly due to lower PV costs — while investment in the oil & gas sector fell 26% to $650bn, according to the World Energy Investment 2017 report.
