Future clean energy growth depends on renewables achieving breakthroughs beyond the power sector, said International Energy Agency (IEA) executive director Fatih Birol, who also predicted that storage could “revolutionise” the world’s energy system.

Birol, who was this week awarded the prestigious Melchett Award by the UK’s Energy Institute, pointed out that around half the growth in global electricity generation last year came from renewables, with the most substantial additions coming from wind and solar power.
