German utility EWE plans to build what it calls “the world’s largest battery,” which it claims could supply the 3.5 million inhabitants of Berlin for an hour.
EWE unit EWE Gasspeicher intends to use redox flow technology in which electricity is stored in a liquid along with new, environmentally friendly components in underground salt caverns. Such caverns are currently being used to store natural gas.
