BC Hydro, British Columbia’s state-owned utility, has agreed to begin participating in the California-run western Energy Imbalance Market (EIM), expanding transcontinental renewable power trading and allowing Canadian hydro to help to integrate more American wind and solar.

BC Hydro’s Powerex unit will become the first non-US participant to join the western EIM in April 2018, though Mexican grid operator CENACE Baja Norte is also considering joining the market.
