The UK government has attempted to significantly weaken key renewables and energy efficiency targets for 2030 proposed by the European Commission (EC), according to leaked documents.

The documents, obtained by the environmental group Greenpeace, show that the UK has lobbied Brussels to water down draft European legislation, ahead of the start of formal Brexit negotiations.

Key renewables and energy efficiency targets proposed by the EC should be reduced, made non-binding, or even scrapped altogether, the UK says, despite the fact they will not take effect until after Britain has left the EU.
