Italy’s Enel has purchased the 25MW/12.5MWh Tynemouth standalone lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS), located in Newcastle in northeast England, from Element Power.

Enel’s Global Thermal Generation division, which is to invest around €20m ($22.2m) in the project, expects it to be completed in early 2018.

“This transaction marks an important step forward in the growth of our group in the promising and innovative sector of standalone battery energy storage systems,” says Enrico Viale, Enel’s head of global thermal generation.
