The European electricity sector has agreed not to build new coal-fired power plants after 2020, it was announced this morning by industry body Eurelectric, whose members are the national power-sector trade associations from all 28 EU states, plus Turkey, Norway, Switzerland and Iceland.

“The power sector is determined to lead the energy transition and back our commitment to the low-carbon economy with concrete action,” said António Mexia, Eurelectric president and chief executive of Portuguese energy group EDP.
