The Norwegian group which claims to be Europe’s biggest renewable energy company, says the investment, through a private placing, is part of Statkraft's commitment to tidal power.

The agreement with Atlantis secures Statkraft access to exclusive negotiating rights for participation in projects initiated by Atlantis to develop tidal energy in the UK and Canada.

Statkraft and Atlantis will also collaborate on licence applications for Scotland's Pentland Firth, where licences to develop up to 700 megawatts (MW) of marine energy are due to be allocated during 2009.
