The new technology will make it possible to transmit more than 10GW up to 3,000km, according to the Switzerland-based power and automation group, which says it has successfully tested the system.

That would surpass the 6.4GW capacity of the world’s first commercial 800kV UHVDC connection, China’s Xiangjiaba-Shanghai link, which was commissioned in 2010 by ABB.

The Xiangjiaba-Shanghai connector – the longest of its type – transports electricity generated at the Xiangjiaba hydropower plant, located in the southwest of the country, some 2,000km to Shanghai.
