Dutch new energy outfit Ampyx Power has completed a study looking into a floating version of its ‘aircraft-driven’ airborne wind energy system (AWES).

The 'Sea-Air-Farm’ project, undertaken by a consortium that included ECN (Energy Research Centre Netherlands), Marin (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) and Mocean Offshore, found that a far-offshore, deep water wind farm built around multiple Ampyx AWES systems would be “technically possible and cost competitive” compared to conventional fixed-bottom and floating projects with “significant further cost reductions expected in the future”.
