PV demand in the Middle East and Africa is predicted to grow by more than 50% this year to 1.6GW.

By 2018, the market will have reached 4.4GW, with Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Israel leading the way.

According to NPD Solarbuzz's Emerging PV Markets Report: Middle East and Africa, the region is becoming a “key market”, with a potential of 10GW. PV demand grew by a spectacular 670% in 2013 - but that was coming off a figure of only 140MW added in the previous year.

Africa and the Middle East have a substantial share of small off-grid PV systems. However, last year the on-grid segment became the main factor driving growth to more than 1GW. NPD Solarbuzz says that by 2018 ground-mount systems will account for more than 70% of the market.
