Germany’s Wacker Chemie enjoyed strong polysilicon sales at the end of 2013 as it reaped the benefits of surging demand for PV products in Asia.

The Munich-based chemical group said sales at Wacker Polysilicon were €250m ($338m) in the fourth quarter, 17% up on the same period in 2012, while prices held steady.

As an EU producer, Wacker is in the clear from anti-dumping tariffs imposed by the Chinese on US polysilicon suppliers.

The polysilicon upswing helped Wacker to a better-than-expected Q4 profit of €158m before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation, 18% higher than a year earlier.

Wacker’s full-year net profit slumped to €6m from a year-earlier €115m under the pressure of a year of low polysilicon and semiconductor wafer prices.
