Norway's Scatec claims SA PV first

Norway-based Scatec Solar said it has linked its 75MW Kalkbult PV plant to the regional network in South Africa’s Northern Cape, claiming it as the first to be grid-connected under the country’s renewables support programme.

Scatec was awarded the project under the first renewables tender held by the South African government in December 2011.

Power from Kalkbult will be sold to state utility Eskom under a 20-year agreement.

The company said it began work on the plant immediately after reaching financial close last November.

Scatec has been awarded three projects totalling 190MW under the renewables programme.

Construction of the next two plants, near Hanover in the Northern Cape and Burgersdorp in the Eastern Cape, is expected to be complete by mid-2014.
