UK 20MW solar project 'approved'

The developer British Solar Renewables (BSR) claims to have secured planning permission for a 20MW PV array near Bournemouth airport in Dorset, the second such project for which it has clinched consent in the past week.

BSR – known until last year as Solar Power Generation – will develop the 20MW Dorset site on 120 acres attached to a waste management and recycling facility.

Last week the Somerset-based developer announced planning permission for another 20MW solar array on a former Royal Air Force airfield in Norfolk.

The company claims to have built more than 32MW of large-scale PV since it was founded in 2010 by farmer Angus MacDonald.

The Dorset site will see modules mounted on steel frames and sitting 2.9m off the ground, surrounded by woodland and hedges for visual screening purposes.

The developer gave no timescale for the project.

The UK added nearly 1GW of PV capacity last year, dynamiting all expectations for the market, and developers believe the market will see sustained growth for at least another two years on the back of the Renewables Obligation.
