That the party claims the ministry for itself comes as no surprise.

The Greens were founded more than 30 years ago, are deeply rooted in the ecological and anti-nuclear movement, and were the driving force behind Germany’s progressive renewable energy act thatintroduced substantial feed-in tariffs more than 10 years ago.

The party also held the environment ministry in the Schröder government that ruled Germany from 1998 to 2005, and introduced the country’s first plan for an exit from atomic energy.
