Total and SunPower score in SA
French energy giant Total has grabbed a share of South Africa’s latest batch of renewable energy contracts.
Total is the largest shareholder in a consortium given preferred bidder status to deliver the $200m 86MW Prieska PV project in the Northern Cape.
The award was made this week as part of the third tender round of South Africa’s renewable energy support scheme.
Total said its US-based SunPower subsidiary will supply its SunPower Oasis Power Blocks technology to the project and “is expected” to provide EPC and long-term operational services to the plant.
The French group expects financial close by mid-2014, construction starting later next year and operations beginning in 2015.
The project will be 80% financed by South African banks with the consortium partners providing the rest, said Total.
The South African government has so far handed out a total of 450MW of PV capacity spread over six projects under the third round process.
