Proposals by energy minister Sigmar Gabriel to introduce a levy on heavy-polluting fossil power plants are increasingly dividing German society, with municipal utilities explicitly backing the plan, while large utilities and unions gear up for mass protests and political parties are split over the issue.
Two solar projects that submitted bargain-basement £50/MWh ($74.5/MWh) power prices in the UK’s first competitive renewable energy auction have failed to sign contracts, it was confirmed today – meaning only 39MW of large-scale PV made it all the way through the new process and nothing will get built under it this year.
