Japan solar shipments double on FIT

Japanese demand for solar panels surpassed 1GW in the final quarter of last year, more than double the same period of 2011, says the Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association (JPEA).

New solar installations have surged since Japan introduced a new feed-in-tariff programme last July.

“Industrial, commercial and residential projects – all segments are booming,” says Masaaki Kameda, a JPEA spokesperson.

The JPEA collected data on cell and module shipment volumes from 37 firms during the three months to December 2012, including Trina, Kyocera and Fuji Electric.

Total shipments hit 1.1GW, including 340MW of imported products. Shipments in the same period of 2011 were 406MW.

Japan’s current FIT for solar is 42 yen ($0.52) per kWh for 20 years. However, the government is expected to announce lower tariffs for the new fiscal year…
