Sharp sees solar cell surge

Sharp raised its full-year sales forecast for its solar cell business after predicting a surge in shipments of more than 70% in the final quarter of the budget year.

It also says it will “accelerate business restructuring” in the unit, including the “scale down of thin-film and the Europe/US market”.

The Japanese electronics giant says it generated solar sales of 55.9bn yen ($600m) in the third quarter, up 9% on the previous quarter, and 14% on the same period a year ago.

It expects to ship 484MW of solar cells for the final three months to 31 March, making sales of 96bn yen or 49% more than the same period of 2011.
