Operating profit from April-June sales of Sharp’s crystalline and thin-film PV cells and modules rose 8.1% from the first quarter of 2012 to ¥6.8bn ($69.2m).

Sales jumped to ¥84.3bn in the first quarter, roughly double a year earlier.

Sharp attributed the increase to strong residential and utility-scale demand for its PV modules in Japan.

A spokesperson tells Recharge that Sharp shipped 343MW of PV cells and modules in the first quarter, up from 253MW a year earlier but below the 503MW it delivered in the fourth quarter of 2012.
