Trina CEO leads new China PV body

Trina Solar CEO Jifan Gao has been named as first president of the newly-formed China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA) – with a promise to champion “free and fair trade".

A statement from Trina said the CPIA is the first national-level body “dedicated to the healthy and sustainable development of the solar industry”.

It boasts 149 members, including big-hitters such as Yingli Solar, JinkoSolar, GCL and Canadian Solar, as well as Trina itself and some major developers.

The Chinese industry has been involved in a series of trade disputes around the world in recent years, most notably in the US and the EU where Chinese exports have been subject to punitive measures after inquiries.

The new body will aim to forge links with bodies including the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) and the Solar Energy Institute of America (SEIA), said the Trina statement.

It also plans to champion “the development and implementation of Chinese PV industry standards and technological innovations” and work with policy-makers at home.

The Trina boss will hold the president’s post for five years.

Gao said: "With China emerging as one of the major players driving the growth of the global PV industry, it has become home to leading PV enterprises dedicated to a shared goal of providing high-quality PV products and solutions to customers around the world.

“Through the founding of CPIA as the largest non-profit PV association in China committed to the principles of free and fair trade, we will unify PV enterprises across China to achieve a common goal of bringing affordable solar energy to the world."
