SunPower and AE-AMD Renewable Energy have grid-connected two ground-mounted PV projects totalling 33MW in South Africa.

The 22MW Herbert and the 11MW Greefspan plants, located near Douglas in the Northern Cape Province, were constructed by US-based SunPower and were part of the South African government's Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme.

Both systems are owned by AE-AMD Renewable Energy, a joint venture between Spain's AMDA energía and South Africa's Alt-E Technologies, and its partners.

Electricity generated from the projects will be sold to state utility Eskom.

Howard Wenger, SunPower's president, says the company is now preparing to begin work on an 86MW plant in Prieska.

SunPower's majority shareholder, Total, along with Mulilo Renewable Energy and other partners, were selected as preferred bidders for Prieska by South Africa's Department of Energy in the third round of the renewables programme.

SunPower is due to provide EPC and long-term O&M services for the project.
