Solar storage 'to boom' in Germany

Sales of solar-power storage systems are expected to skyrocket in Germany to 100,000 units in 2018, up from 6,000 in 2013, according to new report from business development body Germany Trade & Invest (GTAI).

These figures, says GTAI renewable energies manager Tobias Rothacher, suggest a "quiet revolution" in energy storage systems (ESS) is taking shape after German PV generation peaked at a record high 15GW in May.

"Balancing supply with demand in the grid presents operators with a significant challenge and leads to market price fluctuations. That is where storage solutions come into play," he says.

“Many solar installations will have paid for themselves in the next couple of years and some will soon reach the end of their 20-year feed-in tariff contract,” offers Rothacher.

Less expensive, more efficient ESS technology allows owners to store surplus power during the day rather than feeding it into the grid at low prices and buying it back at night when it is more expensive, he notes.

"This helps to reduce grid fluctuations and with feed-in tariffs set to fall this summer, it makes even more economic sense."

The report was prepared based on research from consultancy EuPD.

Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Affairs & Energy Sigmar Gabriel called for battery technology to be returned to its position as "a leading German industry".
