Brazil's solar operating capacity is set to pass the 10MW mark in the coming weeks as pilot project Megawatt Solar and World Cup stadiums get ready to run.

That compares to about 6MW of installed capacity at the beginning of the year.

Megawatt Solar is a 930kW solar array built by the federal power company Eletrosul at its headquarters in the southern state of Santa Catarina.

The panels are installed on the roofs of the company's car park and the main building.

Total investment in the project was R$12m ($5.4m) according to power regulator Aneel. Eletrosul was authorised by Aneel to start tests this week.

The local partnership of GDF Suez and Tractebel started commercial operations of the 3MW Nova Aurora experimental solar plant earlier this month.

The list also include the  960kW solar power plant in the Arena Pernambuco stadium in Pernambuco state, built for this year’s World Cup, and the 404kW Pituaçu stadium in Bahia state, which will not host World Cup games.

Additionally, 1.2MW of solar capacity was implemented in the Mineirão stadium, also a World Cup venue – but this has not yet been listed by Aneel in the country's solar installed capacity.

Most of these projects are part of Aneel's 2011 solar power research and development programme which had three years to be concluded.

Aneel approved 18 experimental and pilot solar projects under the programme. They have a projected combined capacity of 25MW.
