Suntech modules will be used in the UK

Emergent PV powerhouse Shunfeng has announced plans to develop up to 900MW of capacity in the UK by the end of 2015.

The Chinese group will exclusively use modules from recent acquisition Wuxi Suntech to feed its UK developments – a move presaged by the latter’s CEO in an interview with Recharge in March.

Shunfeng said the projects are expected to range in size from 10MW-40MW and total 400MW this year and 500MW in 2015.

Germany-based Greenfield Solar will provide EPC services for the plants.

Shunfeng will provide its own inverters – having recently bought insolvent German inverter specialist Sunways, adding to its high-profile acquisition of the manufacturing rump of fallen module giant Suntech.

The Hong Kong-listed company is currently evaluating various financing options to fund its considerable ambitions on the global solar stage.

The UK is tipped to be Europe’s biggest PV market this year, but Shunfeng chairman Zhang Yi left no doubt that the company sees it as just a start.

"This partnership highlights Shunfeng's strategy to become the largest integrated clean energy supplier globally, integrated not only in terms of manufacturing but also in terms of developing and owning clean energy producing assets," he said.

The developments will use Suntech’s 60-cell polycrystalline modules, which are claimed to be suitable for markets such as the UK, with its weaker sunlight.
