Germany gets 128MW thin-film plant

German PV developer Belectric says it has grid-connected Europe's largest thin-film PV project, a 128MW plant on the grounds of a former military airfield in Templin near Berlin.

Belectric within four months installed more than 1.5 million thin-film modules from First Solar and 114 inverters from German manufacturer SMA.

The plant can meet the annual electricity needs of 36,000 households.

"Power from plants like this is the most economical method of generating from solar energy,” claims Belectric CEO Bernhard Beck. “At present, we have almost reached the power production cost-level of onshore wind.”
