US
thin-film
giant
joined
DII
as
an
associated
partner
for
an
initial
three-year
period
in
March
2010,
less
than
a
year
after
the
organisation
was
established
to
push
forward
plans
to
build
a
mega-network
of
renewables
plants
in
North
Africa
for
export
to
Europe.
For
First
Solar,
the
decision
was
taken
to
“emphasise”
its
commitment
to
the
Middle
East
and
North
Africa
(MENA)
region,
“where
we
see
tremendous
potential
to
build
a
sustainable
market
for
solar
power”,
according
to
Christopher
Burghardt,
vice
president
of
business
development
for
Europe
and
MENA.
