US Energy Secretary Chu to resign

Energy Secretary Steven Chu has announced his resignation after helping oversee unprecedented and sometimes controversial expansion of federal support for clean energy technologies under President Barack Obama.

In his lengthy resignation letter, Chu says he intends to stay on through February and perhaps beyond then “so that I can leave the Department in the hands of the new secretary.”He plans to return to "an academic life of teaching and research."

Obama did not immediately name a replacement.

Among the political candidates are former governors Bill Ritter of Colorado, Christine Gregoire of Washington and Jennifer Granholm of Michigan, former North Dakota Senator Byron Dorgan and an academic, physics professor Ernest Moniz of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
