SolarWorld puts 350 on short time

Embattled German PV manufacturer SolarWorld has put 350 of the 1,300 employees at its site in Freiberg on short-time working.

The measure aims to bridge a period of low demand during the winter and is not supposed to last beyond April 30, a company spokesman says.

Workers in wafer and solar cell manufacturing in Freiberg will work 30% less per month to reduce output in the first quarter.

“We have opted for the measure of short time work to secure jobs at the Freiberg location,” company spokesman Milan Nitzschke says. “We are optimistic that the solar market will pick up again at the beginning of the second quarter.”
