GT Advanced makes production equipment

Solar manufacturing equipment supplier GT Advanced Technologies intends to sell a plant in St. Louis, Missouri, that is developing high-efficiency polysilicon (HiCz) technology as part of a corporate restructuring.

The move, which includes laying off 35 people at the facility, will reduce annual expenses by $15m.

As part of the reorganization, the company is shifting final HiCz product development to plant in Merrimack, New Hampshire.

GT Advanced says it will be ready by mid-2013 to offer the HiCz platform, a next-generation PV furnace that will produce N-type silicon wafers.

“But given current market conditions in the PV industry, orders for the new generation systems may not occur until 2014 when the industry begins to recover,” the company says.
