German firm plans mini-CSP

The protarget pilot plant near Munich

Cologne-based start-up protarget has developed a modular concentrating solar power (CSP) design that aims to provide cheap, turnkey solar installations for the Mediterranean and North Africa regions.

Protarget says it has orders in place to deploy 1MW versions of its CSP units in Italy and Greece later this year, and already has a pilot version up and running in Germany.

The company’s design uses the same basic process and components as large plants.

But protarget claims an analysis of the cost of conventional CSP deployments such as Andasol in Spain shows project costs are driven up by the expense of components and the complexity of the supply chain needed to build them.
